Reform of Information Literacy Education under the Guidance of  Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education

Abstract:

ACRL newly issued Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, which is an important guidance to information literacy education at the international level. This paper discusses reform issues in information literacy education through analysis of the guiding principles, contents, structure, and relevant teaching theories of the above Framework. This paper analyzes the guiding principles of the new Framework, explores new vision of information literacy education, expands the connotation of information literacy, and identifies new educational goals. By careful reading of various components of the Framework, and summarizing relevant teaching points, this paper provides a reference for the reform of teaching contents. This paper also explores reform and innovation in teaching modes of information literacy, including the roles of librarians in the new teaching modes, and thus makes recommendations for information literacy education in Chinese universities in the implementation of the new Framework. And we think that the teaching objectives of information literacy education should be oriented towards new information environment, and towards various stages of information events in research and development. The teaching objectives are to build information capacities for learners in all aspects such as emotion, behavior, cognition, and critical thinking. Reform in information literacy education should include the following points:1)changing people’s mindset;2)forming new understanding of the connotation of information literacy, including educational goals;3)redesigning the educational programs for information literacy and their guidelines regarding teaching contents;4)changing teaching modes;5)integrating into specialized educational programs; 6)developing a unique role of librarians.
