Questions Attributes’ Impact on Answer Domains in a Social Q&A Platform

Abstract:

In a social Q&A platform, subjective and objective questions will lead to different answers by the users. In this paper, 2604 pairs of questions and answers from the Yahoo! Answers were analyzed. It found out that numbers of words of questions and how detailed the information is had no positive correlation with the numbers of answers based on correlation analysis of questions attributes and answer domain. Conversely, the shorter the average length of questioning sentences is and the stronger readability of the questions is, the more attractive they become and the more detailed the answers tend to be. However, the usage of emotion expressions such as thanks or anxiety fails to attract more detailed answers. Thereby, this paper suggests the questioner use concise and short sentences to express the problems as much as possible, and try to use such words as “who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, “why” and “how” to lead the questions so as to strengthen their readability.
