Abstract:

In the Republic period of China, China started to build the professional educational institutes for library science, aiming to training library scholars in China. By literature analysis and quantitative method, I systematically reviewed the information of the hometrained library scholars receiving their enlightenment education in the colleges of library science, or the department of library science in universities which include the Department of Library Science of Jinling University in Nanjing, Boone Library school in Wuchang (including the Department of Library Science of its former Boone University period and Huazhong University period), Department of Library Science of National University in Shanghai, Department of Library and Museum Science of National Society Education College in Sichuan (including Suzhou period), Department of Library Science of Peking University in Peking. Those scholars who took library courses in universities, or took library courses by correspondence education, in summer school, and in a variety of shortterm seminal classes are also included. Based on their publications, translations as well as the citations, 128 outstanding scholars were selected to be quantitatively analyzed. It was found that these hometrained library scholars were trained unevenly in different years. The excellent scholars predominantly came from some institutes which had positive influence and radiating role in the local area. Most of them were trained before the AntiJapanese War. There are relatively few female outstanding scholars. The main academic achievements of these scholars were made in the Republic Period of China. The empirical analysis enriches the knowledge of the training of library science in the Republic Period of China.
