Report on MLIS Program Development Survey in China(2017)

Abstract:

[Purpose/Significance]Under the guidance of the Education Steering Committee Secretariat of MLIS, we conducted the fifth survey report on the developing status quo of MLIS education. [Design/Methodology]This report explored China's MLIS education status in 2017 from five aspects including training institutes, teaching staff, enrollment and employment, cultivation, and academic degree program. The developing tendency of MLIS education was revealed according to the historical data. [Findings/Conclusion]According to the survey of 30 MLIS education institutions, the number of full time faculty was 946, and the number of tutors in MLIS was up to 535 in 2017. There were 1109 graduate freshmen in 2017. Among the 1064 students with detailed information, 25.47% of them are from the first class universities and disciplines, while 72.46% of them are from other disciplines than LIS. According to the survey of 613 graduates, 41.76% of them decided to work in state organs, public institutions and social groups, while 47.96% chose to work in enterprises. By constantly exploring and standardizing the educational model and teaching resources of MLIS, many institutions have gradually formed their own characteristics. [Originality/Value]This study is expected to improve the education developing level of MLIS in China.
