Persistence and Extension of Information Science:Literature Review on the Proceedings of 2018 ASIS&T Annual Meeting

Abstract:

[Purpose/Significance]This article reviews 169 papers published in the proceedings of 2018 ASIS&T Annual Meeting. It summarizes the studies from three aspects, such as the core area, traditional area, and new area of information science, addressing their main research questions and results. It also analyzes the feature of the studies. [Design/Methodology]This is a literature review. [Findings/Conclusion]The article points out that some papers in the proceedings are concerned with social issues, which indicate the scholars' humanity and social responsibility of the discipline; the needs from social practice motivate some research; an interdisciplinary trend with data science has become an obvious feature in the development of information science; more and more new technological methods have been applied to the researchin information science; mixed research methods have been widely adopted and become a trend in information science; interdisciplinary and multidimensional perspective has been an salient feature of the discipline; it shows that the discipline still stands on the core and traditional area, while innovation and extension of the information science is also obvious. [Originality/Value]The article presents the features of the papers presented in 2018 ASIS&T Annunal Meeting in specific, while it also indicates the features and trends of information science in general.
