Abstract: [Purpose/Significance]Library and information science (LIS) postgraduates are a newemerging force in the development of the LIS industry. In order to meet the requirements of the developments in the new era, it is necessary for LIS postgraduates to enhance their core competence. [Design/Methodology]With 297 valid questionnaires, this paper took LIS practitioners as the survey respondents to investigate their analysis and judgment on LIS postgraduates’ core competence, the competence differences between LIS postgraduates nonLIS postgraduates, the development trend of the core competence for LIS in the future and so on. Moveover,this paper examined employers’ evaluation on the core competence of LIS postgraduates. [Findings/Conclusion]Several suggestions have been proposed, including maintaining the advantages of traditional competence, strengthening the cultivation of innovative competence, improving the knowledge system in interdisciplinary fields, keeping pace with practice, improving technical competence, and attracting multidisciplinary talents. [Originality/Value]This paper reveals employers’ evaluation on the core competence of LIS postgraduates after their employment, which can help improve the educational pattern in LIS, and enhance the core competitiveness of LIS postgraduates.
