An Empirical Study on the Social Curation Behavior from the Perspective of Social Capital: Taking huaban.com as an Example

Abstract: [Purpose/Significance]As a new kind of information organizing behavior, social curation could help to reduce the retrieval pressure caused by information explosion. In order to reveal the inherent characteristics of social curation, this study analyzes this information behavior from the perspective of social capital. [Design/Methodology]With the use of literature research, the research model was built and the relevant variables were determined based upon the social capital theory and the consensus of the academic community on socialized curation behavior. The methods of social network analysis and statistical analysis were used to explore the relationship of the variables.[Findings/Conclusion]It has been found that some social capital variables could affect social curation behavior. Meanwhile, the network of social relationship is the main channel for information acquisition and transmission, and the bridging role could promote users' curation behavior. Besides, both instrumental and emotional characteristics exist in social curation behavior.[Originality/Value]Impact factors of social curation behavior has been discussed and summarized from the perspective of social capital, and the inherent characteristics of social curation behavior has been explored. Finally, suggestions for improving social curation platforms have been proposed.
