Study and Practice on Manga Collection in Japan’s Public Libraries

Abstract:

As a part of literature resources of libraries, Japan’s libraries is facing the issue of collecting and utilizing manga. There were many researches on this subject. This paper divides the subject into two main parts: theory sudies and practice activities. In the first part of this article, three questions, which include disputes over manga, the practical problems, and investigations based on current situations, are summarized to help people get an over view on the subject. The second part of this article is a case study. The authors take Hiroshima manga library as an example, to figure out how users’ needs, library budget, and the organization format affect public libraries when collecting manga resources. The experience from Japan is enlightening for us to the construction of feature resources in modern libraries.
