Abstract: [Purpose/Significance]The implementation of representative work evaluation is one of the critical issues of research evaluation reform currently in China. The empirical study can help improve the theoretical construction of representative work evaluation, and provide decision-making reference for research policy reform.[Design/Methodology]Based on bibliometrics approach and non-parametric test, we analyzed the characteristics of representative works of Turing prize-winners from the following perspectives: time cycle, first carrier and type of research.[Findings/Conclusion]Firstly, there is a trend of time-consuming increasement between the release of representative work and the recognition by the Turing Award. Secondly, representative works of different carriers vary in the time of completion and recognition, particularly for the conference papers and inventions. Thirdly, for some representative works, the types of research have a relatively significant impact on authors’ age of completion and the time required to be recognized.[Originality/Value]We took Turing Award as an empirical case and analyzed the characteristics of the prize winners’ academic representative works. The results could contribute to the design and implementation of representative work evaluation system.
