From Skills to Value:Cultural Interpretation on Framework for Information literacy for Higher Education

Abstract:

As a programmatic document of information literacy instruction, “framework of information literacy” issued by the American association of university and research libraries, has evoked a strong repercussion in LIS. The framework changes from emphasizing on technical standards to build a set of abstract values. At present, relational research mainly focusing on the content analysis, is not conducive to the further understanding. Based on the content characteristics, the basis of the theory, and social response, this paper tries to discuss the background factors of “framework”. In the new historical period, promoting information fair is basic mission for library, and maintaining academic freedom is the fundamental work ethic of academic library. Facing with the bottleneck of development, taking criticism as a value dimension, it is a important strategy of information literacy instruction which cultivates students’ critical thinking to seek development. The discussing on factors of background will help librarians understand the nature of the framework, and promote the development of information literacy education.
