Abstract: [Purpose/Significance]From the perspective of information literacy, this paper explored the approaches of improving public false information identification ability and proposed countermeasures for increasingly serious phenomenon of false information. [Design/Methodology]With the use of internet research, literature research and case study, this paper reviewed the history, evolution and current situation of global practice and research on developing public false information identification skills. False information identification in several contexts were listed and analyzed such as news media, healthcare, and citizenship. Experience of developed countries were summarized, including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Finland. Moreover, major problems faced by the international society were discussed. Accordingly, countermeasures have been proposed for our country. [Findings/Conclusion]Research on false information identification is increasingly deepened and the practical scenarios gradually extend. In developed countries, policies, library services and education methods play good roles in improving people's disinformation identification abilities. Globally speaking, several problems remain including unbalanced development among countries, insufficient teaching resources, and inadequate research. Our country should perfect information literacy policies against the phenomenon of false information, carry out library services of false information identification, and integrate information literacy knowledge into the compulsory education system as soon as possible.[Originality/Value]This paper could enrich the theoretical research on information literacy and provide countermeasures for improving false information identification skills for the public of China.
