Study on the Historical Evolution of Chinese Library Science Textbook in the Past 100 Years

Abstract: [Purpose/Significance]Library science textbook is an important component of disciplinary memory,and tracking its historical evolution could provide a reference for promoting the development of library science textbook. It is also significant for exploring the normalization and scalization of library science education, as well as the professionalization of library work.
[Design/Methodology]This study used content analysis method to conduct an in-depth analysis for 805 library science textbooks collected by literature survey and network survey. Combined with the development stages of Chinese library science education, the evolution of library science textbook was divided into four stages. Moreover, the achievements and characteristics of different stages were differentiated and summarized.[Findings/Conclusion]The evolutionary rules of Chinese library science textbook in the past one hundred years could be concluded as supplementary relationship between the development of textbook and the education, the development of knowledge system from links to blocks, the transformation of content reasonability from skills to science, and the change from one-way introduction to multi-dimensional integration.[Originality/Value]This paper provides a clear outline and summary of the overall situation, development stages and research characteristics of library science textbook construction in China in the past 100 years. It consists of not only narratives of different stages, but also description and statistical analysis of the bibliographic information about library science teaching materials, which aims to provide new insights and clues for the research of library science education and textbook history.
