The Archival Education of Boone Library School and Colleges in Europe and America from a Comparative Perspective

Abstract: [Purpose/Significance]This paper aims to explore the differences of archival education between Boone Library School and colleges in Europe and America, and reveal the disciplinary origins, local characteristics, and educational achievements of Boone Library School’s archival education.[Design/Methodology]With the use of comparative study and induction, this paper analyzed and compared the archival education in Boone Library School and colleges in Europe and America from three aspects, which are the disciplinary backgrounds and affiliations, the curriculum settings and the educational achievements.[Findings/Conclusion]There are both differences and relevance in the traditions and disciplinary origins of contemporaneous archival education between Boone Library School and colleges in Europe and the America. Archival education in Boone Library School derives from the education system of library science, which is oriented to the needs of government administration and document management, as well as the talent cultivation of modern documents management; archival education in European and American colleges originates from the history education system and is oriented to the heritage institutions such as national archives, which aims to cultivate professionals of historical archives management. Moreover, archival education of Boone Library School absorbed the thoughts and methods of archival science, library science and administrative science in the West. At the same time, it possesses some local characteristics.[Originality/Value]This study is the first one which has made a horizontal comparison for the contemporaneous archival education between Boone Library School and colleges in Europe and America. It is beneficial to the analysis of the characteristics of Boone Library School under certain spatio-temporal backgrounds.
