The Formulation of Standards for Proficiencies for Assessment Librarians in Academic Libraries and Its Enlightenment

Abstract:

In order to evaluate and enhance the comprehensive proficiencies of assessment librarians, American Association of College and Research Libraries issued “Standards for Proficiencies for Assessment Librarians and Coordinators(Draft)” in May, 2016. The article expounds the context of the standards from the perspective of the value requirements of academic libraries and the development of assessment librarian position, and adopts literature analysis method to analyzes the indicators of the standards,including assessment knowledge, assessment ethics, assessment methods and strategies, research design, data collection & analysis, communication & reporting, advocacy & marketing, collaboration & partnerships, leadership, management and mentoring, training & coaching. The research indicates that the standards highlight the role of librarians in academic assessment programs, focus on proficiencies, and are optional and operational, which encourages academic libraries to focus on assessment subjects, set assessment librarian as specialized position, assess the proficiencies of assessment librarians regarding the standards and strengthen the practice of assessment librarians to create a library assessment culture.
