Abstract:

As an independent and emerging field, data science provides a new perspective for considering the relationship between information science and data. By using the content analysis method, this study compared the core curriculum settings of information science, computer science, statistics and data science in the knowledge framework of data science. Results indicate that the knowledge structure of information science is highly compatible with the knowledge framework of data science, which is partly because both of them regard intelligence as the ultimate goal in application. Compared with data science, information science pays more attention to the use of small and mediumsized data and data management in orde to let data speak. Moreover, results reveal two possibilities for the relationship between information science and data: (1) in the researching process, information science can “let data speak”, which means more discoveries can be made directly from data; (2) in the researching issues, information science can “help data speak”, which can improve the use of data. The new relationship provides a new possibility for the discipline construction of information science.
