Abstract: [Purpose/Significance] Researcher profiling primarily involves collecting data from multiple sources to extract and add appropriate labels to outline the multidimensional characteristics of targeted researchers. This paper aims to clarify the current status of this research field, explore its directions of research in the digital intelligence era, and better serve the effective solution of many application problems such as literature retrieval, cooperator recommendation and academic evaluation, etc. [Design/Methodology] Based on comprehensive literature review, we summarize its research progress and existing problems in the field of researcher profile at home and abroad, and then give corresponding countermeasures and suggestions for its future development. [Findings/Conclusion] Though significant research progress and several research consensus points have been achieved in the field of researcher profile, some prominent issues still remain in the dominant empirical and applied studies, such as insufficient utilization of profiling data, incomplete profiling dimensions, absence of agreements regarding profiling content, and limited innovation in profiling methodologies, etc. Future efforts should focus on strengthening its theoretical construction, expanding or deepening its perspective of bibliometrics especially by Citation Content Analysis（CCA）, paying more attention to some topics related to academic personality, and effectively using emerging AIGC-type tools to continuously enhance the theorization, precision, and intelligence of researcher profile research. [Originality/Value] Facing up to future research needs and new challenges in the age of digital intelligence, a systematic overview and some valuable suggestions are given in this study.
