Narrowed Information Universe: A Review of Research on Information Cocoons, Selective Exposure, and Echo Chambers
    Documentation, Informaiton & Knowledge    2021, 38 (5): 134-144.   DOI: 10.13366/j.dik.2021.05.134
    Abstract1254)      PDF(pc) (1219KB)(1470)       Save
[Purpose/Significance]Information cocoons and echo chambers are both connected with humans’inherent tendency to approach what they like and/or avoid what they dislike. For lack of exposure to the heterogeneous information from the outside, one’s information horizon becomes more and more limited, which in turn reinforces his or her selective information behavior. This study aims to reveal the status quo of existing related research and identify future research trends.[Design/Methodology]This study originally attempted to conduct a systematic review on the existing studies of information cocoons and echo chambers, respectively. However, there existed no empirical research on the former. Hence, this study instead surveyed the literature on selective exposure for its high relevance to information cocoons.[Findings/Conclusion]Selective exposure studies, basically driven by the social issues pertinent to the two dominating topics,i.e., politics and health; echo chambers studies identified various echo chambers, such as political, science/conspiracy, health, policy, scholarly echo chambers, while a minority of the studies doubted the existence of echo chambers. Information cocoons, selective exposure, and echo chambers all refer to the overall behavior patterns of dispositional selection. The existing related studies were limited to the cognition dimension of human attitudes when examining the influence of attitudes on information selection while neglecting the affect and conation dimensions; and they failed to distinguish between single behavior occurrences and overall behavior patterns which is not helpful to the change of overall behavior patterns.[Originality/Value]This study contributes a compressive overview of the literature on information cocoons, selective exposure, and echo chambers. The meaning and relationships among the three concepts were clarified, which led to the new concept of "narrowed information universe" that emphasizes the behavioral patterns of selective approach/avoidance in information acquisition. Useful implications were engendered for the future research on the narrowed information universe.

The Impact Factors of Users’ Paying Behavior for Knowledge on Social Q&A Platform Based on Social Capital Theory
    DOCUMENTATION,INFORMATION & KNOWLEDGE    2018, 0 (4): 15-23.   DOI: 10.13366/j.dik.2018.04.015

The rising of the payingforknowledge mode has promoted the reform of the traditional online Q&A service. More and more social Q&A platforms have launched the knowledge paid service. From the perspective of knowledge providers' own factors and using the social capital theory, this paper constructed a theoretical model of the factors affecting users' knowledge paying behavior, which has three dimensions including structural social capital, relational social capital and cognitive social capital of knowledge providers. By crawling data on the "live" column of Zhihu.com, the model was verified by the negative binomial panel regression method. The results showed that expert attributes, such as the number of followers, the number of published articles, the number of paid questions the expert answered, the number of times that answers are approved, whether the expert has a real name certification, as well as whether the expert mentions his/her area of expertise, all have positive effects on users' purchasing decision. Accordingly, this paper provides relevant countermeasures for knowledge providers to better accumulate their own social capital on the social Q&A platform and obtain more favors from paying users. Meanwhile, this study also puts forward feasible suggestions for social Q&A platforms to improve the knowledge payment model.

[Purpose/Significance] Drawing on Expectation Confirmation Theory(ECT) and related theories of knowledge acquisition, the study aims at exploring whether and how knowledge payment can alleviate users' knowledge anxiety, which helps to understand the user's psychology for knowledge payment and optimize the design of knowledge products. [Design/Methodology] The mixed-method was adopted. Firstly, we used an in-depth interview to build a theoretical framework depicting the relationship between the use of online knowledge products and their anxiety alleviating. Then, we conducted a questionnaire survey to examine the impact of the use of online knowledge products on users' anxiety alleviating and its underlying mechanism. [Findings/Conclusion] The main findings are:(1)The degree of expectation confirmation is the logical starting point to understand whether knowledge payment can alleviate knowledge anxiety;(2)The relief of knowledge anxiety depends on both the confirmation of expectation and individuals' continuous efforts;(3)The current knowledge payment products are more suitable for users with low or middle thirst for knowledge to alleviate knowledge anxiety. [Originality/Value] Theoretically, the study proposed a conceptual model of knowledge payment and knowledge anxiety relief, then verified the conditions of knowledge payment to relieve knowledge anxiety. Practically, the results provided insightful information for users to make decision in purchasing and form strategies for knowledge paid product, and for product developers to maintain the sustainable development of the products.
