Abstract:

There is a hot debate on shallow reading and deep reading in academia these years. The debate focuses on: is it positive energy or negative energy that has been released by shallow reading? The popularity of shallow reading, which is influenced by consumerism and postmodernism, shows mass culture’s resistance against elite culture, and indicates that print culture is being replaced by visual culture. Shallow reading is an important way for us to acquire information but not knowledge which should be obtained through deep reading. It is very important to instruct folks to from the habit of deep reading by means of new media. It is harmful for us to be addicted to shallow reading and rely on it excessively because the popularity of shallow reading is destroying human beings’ suspicion spirit, thinking ability and rational thinking which are based on writing and print culture, and the deep pattern of human culture will give way to the plane pattern of culture.
