Survey Report on the Development Status of Undergraduate Degree Education in Big Data Management and Application(2024)

Abstract: [Purpose/Significance] In the context of the swift integration of "artificial intelligence +" into diverse disciplines, the major of Big Data Management and Application has also witnessed corresponding transformations. Conducting an investigations and research into the development status of undergraduate education in this major within China is of great significance, as it can effectively reflect its evolving trends and thereby enable the formulation of pertinent suggestions.[Design/Methodology] This paper obtains the approval data of undergraduate programs from the official website of the Ministry of Education of China, and undertakes a systematic analysis of the progress of undergraduate education in Big Data Management and Application in China from three key aspects: the current situation of colleges and universities, the requirement of national policies and industry, along with the impact of the wave of artificial intelligence. By comparing with the circumstances of previous years, this study also accurately reflects the development trend of this major.[Findings/Conclusion] As of October 2024, the number of training institutions offering this major in China(excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan)has reached 252. When formulating training programs, most colleges and universities have actively developed by leveraging their respective advantages. However, there is still a misalignment between the curriculum systems and training objectives of some training institutions and the orientation of social needs. It is essential to leverage artificial intelligence to empower this discipline in accordance with national and social needs, and enhance the core competitiveness of the major. [Originality/Value] Through a comprehensive review of the talent policies and employment requirements related to big data, this article conducts a thorough investigation and in-depth analysis of the undergraduate major of Big Data Management and Application in China. It accurately depicts the current situation and development trends of this major, thereby providing valuable insights for training institutions in their continuous cultivation of big data talents.
