[Purpose/Significance] This study explores the underlying conditions for older adults' use of social media to optimize their well-beings and empirically examines the impact of short video watching on older adults' mental health for policy implication. [Design/Methodology] Drawing on relevant theories from information sociology, communication psychology, and economics, we first proposed an analytical framework and research hypotheses based on the perspective of compensation-selective optimization theory, and then empirically examined the impacts of short video platform use on the levels of depression and happiness of older adults aged 60 and above with a nationally representative data in 2020. Our aim was to investigate the effective mediators of short video viewing behavior that integrates optimal compensatory selection for health and social needs in reducing physical and psychological social isolation among the elderly. [Findings/Conclusion] Evidence show that short video watching behavior is not significantly and directly associated with depressive symptoms or happiness among older adults, however can significantly affect health behaviors and social connectedness. Health behaviors and social connectedness both have a direct predictive impact on reducing the level of depression in the elderly and also play significant positive mediating roles in the correlation between short-video viewing and older adults' mental health. Importantly, there exists a nonlinear relationship between times spent on internet and mental health of the elderly. The positive mediating effect of health behavior would disappear if one uses Internet over 5 hours. [Originality/Value] This study innovatively analyzes impacts of rational and irrational new media platform use through a compensatory selective optimization theoretical perspective and examines mediating effects of reducing physical and mental isolation in the relationship of short video watching and mental health.

    Abstract514)      PDF(pc) (704KB)(645)       Save
[Purpose/Significance] Supporting policy formulation is one of the significant reflections of the societal value of scientific research achievements, yet the intricate mechanisms of policy impact of scientific research achievements still remain unclear. This study focuses on the origins of policy impact, investigating the characteristics of policy impact produced by different types of academic papers. The relevant results can provide empirical evidence for scientific research managers to better understand and evaluate the societal value of scientific research achievements. [Design/Methodology] By delineating two primary dimensions of whether the research motivation is policy-oriented and whether the research content provides supportive or persuasive information, we construct a theoretical model for categorizing research articles in terms of policy impact. The specific implementation pathway for classifying different types is designed based on the abstracts of articles. Using articles within the field of biomedicine as an example, and following a framework of "policy impact diffusion – diverse impact comparison – research entity retrospective" to design multidimensional indicators, an empirical research is conducted to reveal the similarities and differences among different types of articles. [Findings/Conclusion] Among the articles with policy citations, policy-oriented papers under the types of action recommendation and decision support are more prevalent. Meanwhile, among the subset of articles with high policy citation counts, there is a higher proportion of papers that offer supportive information under the types of information provision and decision support. The immediacy and persistence of policy citations, along with the diversity of citing institutions and countries, all exhibit differentiated characteristics among these four types of articles. These articles demonstrate relatively consistent influence levels across different scenarios, particularly between online dissemination and policy support domains. From the subject perspective, a retrospective analysis of the causes of policy impacts reveals that international collaboration facilitates such impacts, and the four types of papers produced by different countries, along with their respective characteristics of policy impact, exhibit distinctive features. [Originality/Value] This study constructs a classification model and implementation framework for research articles from a policy impact perspective. It provides a new theoretical framework and methodological guidance for dissecting and understanding the policy impact of scientific research.

[Purpose/Significance] In the context of a rapidly aging society, smart home care for the elderly has emerged as a crucial trend. Currently, poor transparency and interpretability in human-machine interactions cause low acceptance of intelligent technology and poor trust experience among the elderly. Exploring the role of interactive control methods and agent feedback mechanisms that incorporating experiential knowledge can contribute to improve the intention of elderly users and offer a novel trajectory for the design of human-intelligent interaction. [Design/Methodology] A controlled experiment of human-intelligence interaction was constructed, and a two-factors mixed experiment of 3(interaction control mode: voice/App/mechanical)×2(interaction feedback mode: calm/active)was conducted. Three groups of subjects were recruited, with 30 older adults in each group watching two sets of interaction demonstration videos of smart cameras, and the trust experience of human-intelligence interaction was measured by scale. [Findings/Conclusion] For the privacy avoidance function of the agent, when empirical knowledge is applied to the human-intelligence interaction control method, the interaction trust experience of the aged population can be significantly affected. The trust degree of pull cord control is significantly better than that of voice control and App control and the above effect exists in the calm feedback. During active feedback, the influence of experiential knowledge on trust experience is suppressed, and there is no significant difference between pull cord control and voice control. [Originality/Value] Focusing on the influence of experiential knowledge on the trust experience of older adults in the control mode of human-intelligent interaction, this paper accurately measures the trust experience of the seniors through controlled experiments, providing a theoretical basis for optimizing the interaction experience from the level of the trust experience, and enriching the basic criteria of intelligent agents interaction design.

    Abstract407)      PDF(pc) (699KB)(482)       Save
[Purpose/Significance] Currently, the scale and influence of papers published by Chinese researchers in international journals have been in a leading position in the world. However, there are still some challenges faced, including the imbalance between the scale of Chinese international journals and the need for publishing, the prominent phenomenon of paper outflow, and the limited international influence. Against this backdrop, how to grow from a major country in international paper publication to a strong journal country is a difficult point in the construction of the internationalization of academic journals in China. [Design/Methodology] This study investigates 284 international academic journals from the China Mainland indexed in the three major Web of Science databases, comparing the roles of domestic and foreign publishers in promoting the internationalization of Chinese academic journals. [Findings/Conclusion] Foreign publishers have played an important role in promoting the internationalization of Chinese academic journals, but domestic publishers are also showing a vigorous development trend. From the disciplinary perspective, domestic publishers in the natural sciences have formed a certain "build a boat to sail" scale, while the phenomenon of "borrow a boat to sail" is more obvious in the humanities and social sciences. In terms of internationalization effects, academic journals of foreign publishers generally have higher academic impact, higher international collaboration rate, and broader international dissemination range. Based on the research results, this paper proposes that the internationalization of China's academic journals should be supported by policy guidance, platform construction, and mechanism optimization. It is necessary to fully utilize the "borrow a boat to sail" strategy at the current stage, and actively promote the transformation to "build a boat to sail" in the future, in order to serve the national strategy of becoming self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology. [Originality/Value] The innovation of this study is reflected in the systematic analysis of China's international academic journals from the perspective of comparing domestic and foreign publishers, thereby providing a reference for promoting the internationalization of China's academic journals.

[Purpose/Significance] Training data for Generative Artificial Intelligence(GenAI)contains many works that are still under copyright protection. It is helpful to resolve the dispute of copyright law of GenAI training data to clear whether the fair use rules should be set for machine learning. [Design/Methodology] This study examines the expressive and non-expressive machine learning from typological perspective and determines whether fair use rules should be established by the logic that "unauthorized use of works to training GenAI constitutes infringement, following with licensed use rules hinders technological progress, and other simplified authorizing mechanisms are not applicable". [Findings/Conclusion] The input and training stages of non-expressive machine learning, conform to "use on work", there is no need to set fair use rules as it does not constitute infringement. The output stage of expressive machine learning, referred to as "use of work", should be subject to discuss separately because of the difference scenes before and after GenAI is opened to the public. Prior to its public release, the output results of GenAI are mainly used for model verification about the training situation, which can be considered fair use. However, once it is made available to the public, any output that alters the expression of the original work beyond the scope of adaptation is considered to proper use otherwise constitutes infringement. Since the infringement at output phase does not hinder GenAI technology development, there is no need to set specific fair use rules for it. [Originality/Value] Compared with the previous research, this study has different analysis methods and conclusions, which is instructive for AI practitioners and legal workers in exploring copyright law related to GenAI training data, as well as enriching and deepening existing research.

[Purpose/Significance] The copyright risks of generative artificial intelligence(AI)training data have currently drawn widespread attention. It is necessary to propose a copyright compliance scheme based on an in-depth analysis of specific risks to provide guidance for relevant obligated subjects. [Design/Methodology] Based on China's copyright-related system, following the judgment process of "whether it falls within the scope of copyright control - whether it constitutes fair use", this paper analyzes the usage behaviors and copyright risks across the stages of data input, model training and content output. [Findings/Conclusion] The finding indicates that there is no risk of copyright infringement during the model training stage. However, the data input stage carries risks related to infringement of the right of reproduction. During the content output stage, there are risks of infringement of the rights of reproduction, adaptation, integrity protection, information network dissemination and broadcasting. Therefore, the service providers who also act as model trainers must develop copyright compliance schemes for both works in the public domain and within the copyright protection period. Pure service providers need to prevent the continuation of risks during the model development stage and ensure copyright compliance during the service provision stage. [Originality/Value] This paper analyzes the copyright risks of associated with generative artificial intelligence training data in detail, and proposes some solutions for ensuring copyright compliance, providing copyright compliance guidance for enterprises and institutions to carry out model training and deliver external service activities.

[Purpose/Significance] Differences in the scope of indexing among various policy citation databases may lead to different results in the policy metric analyses of scientific papers. In order to better support the measurement and evaluation of the policy impact of scientific research outcomes, a comparative study is needed to understand the differences in the data foundations provided by different databases. [Design/Methodology] This study compared the similarities and differences in the range of policy documents included in Altmetric and Overton, two mainstream policy citation databases, during the same period. It also compared the policy citation data provided by Altmetric and Overton for approximately 17 million scientific papers, focusing on aspects such as data coverage, data volume, and disciplinary distribution. [Findings/Conclusion] Compared to Altmetric, Overton provides a broader range and greater number of policy documents and policy citations, demonstrating a significant data advantage. However, only a small portion of the policy documents included in Altmetric and Overton overlap, representing different policy viewpoints and behaviors of different policymakers regarding the use of scientific evidence. Therefore, these databases are difficult to substitute for one another and can be complementary. [Originality/Value] In the quantitative evaluation of the policy impact of scientific research achievements, we should pay attention to and warn the potential impact of the choice of policy citation database on the results, and develop reasonable data acquisition strategies to achieve more responsible evaluations.

[Purpose/Significance] This study explores the strategies through which Chinese academic papers influence international policy-making, aiming to provide insights for enhancing China's role in global policy governance. [Design/Methodology] Drawing on Lasswell's "5W" model of communication, this study constructs a theoretical framework for examining the impact of scientific research on policy-making. Using Chinese academic papers cited in policy documents released by United Nations as research samples, the analysis delves into the characteristics from three key perspectives: the producing entities, research content, and dissemination carriers. [Findings/Conclusion] Regarding producing entities, a significant proportion of the sample papers set are produced by non-university institutions, with notable collaboration between Chinese and international institutions. In terms of research content, the distribution of disciplines and sub-themes in the sample papers show a strong demand orientation. As for dissemination carriers, papers published in top international academic journals and those focused on addressing real-world problems and providing policy support are more likely to influence policy-making. However, Chinese institutions have limited publications in high-policy-visibility journals. [Originality/Value] This study constructs a "5W" analytical framework for examining the impact of scientific research on policy-making and conducts an empirical analysis. It offers three recommendations: matching institutional characteristics with policy service goals, leveraging the power of journals to enhance the visibility of research results in the policy arena, and strengthening the cultivation of collaboration with major international institutions and the involvement opportunities of Chinese scholars in these institutions.

[Purpose/Significance] The excessive development and application of algorithmic recommendation technology in digital-intelligent era has intensified the information cocoon and triggered the "disappearance of the nearby". The research and deciphering of this phenomenon can provide references for regulating algorithmic technology, optimizing users' information behavior and improving the social environment. [Design/Methodology] This study adopts a progressive structure, metaphorically referred to as "spinning a cocoon" "breaking the cocoon" and "becoming a butterfly", to examine the stage dilemma encountered by the user subject in the hazard response of "algorithmic recommendation—information cocoon—disappearance of the nearby". Additionally, it proposes targeted strategies to break the information cocoon and reproduce "the nearby". [Findings/Conclusion] In the process of "spinning a cocoon", users encounter a series of challenges, including "the dilemma of cyberspace of role degradation—the dilemma of conceptual cognition of thinking solidification—the dilemma of real life of emotional desalination". To "breaking the cocoon", it is essential to emphasize the subjective status of users in the algorithm-driven society, and improve their algorithm literacy from the algorithm cognition, algorithm skill and algorithm specification. "Becoming a butterfly" should integrate the three paths of self-awakening, virtual and real symbiosis and technological goodness to achieve pioneering changes and reproduce "the nearby". [Originality/Value] From the perspective of the discipline of Information Resource Management (IRM), this study explores the relationship between algorithmic recommendation, information cocoon and the social phenomenon of "disappearance of the nearby", and seeks the path to solve the problem,so as to contribute disciplinary wisdom and solutions to the healthy functioning and coordinated development of society.

[Purpose/Significance] The phenomenon of information manipulation by platform enterprises utilizing their information resource provided by interaction design is widespread, having attracted extensive international attention. The validation of the impact of interaction design information manipulation can offer valuable insights for the formulation of platform governance strategies in China. [Design/Methodology] This paper defines the concept of information manipulation and categorizes the types of information manipulation strategies through interaction design. Then, taking the information manipulation phenomenon based on the design of "mark" on the trending topics of platform as the object, it introduces the Linear Influence Model to fit the diffusion behavior of social network, and adopts non-parametric method to demonstrate heat anomalies in the case of non-compliant marks. Forther more, it compares and analyzes multiple cases to confirm that heat anomalies are due to the influence of non-compliant marks, thus validating the effectiveness of the information manipulation. [Findings/Conclusion] The presence of information manipulation strategies through interaction design has been confirmed, the results of model simulation for expected trends and actual results indicate the subsequent impact of information manipulation, and comparative experimental analyses illustrate that information manipulation based on the interaction design may be responsible for the platform's topic heat anomalies. [Originality/Value] This paper provides a comprehensive review of the concept of information manipulation and various strategies for information manipulation through interaction design, and quantitatively analyzes the impact of these strategies. The empirical evidence that information manipulation through interaction design significantly influences users' behaviors provied in this paper offers valuable insights for promoting responsible platform development, government network governance, and related academic research.
