The Education Accreditation of Health Informatics in America and Its Influence in Library and Information Science

Abstract: [Purpose/Significance]This paper aims to analyze the standard of the education accreditation, the professional qualification certification of health informatics, and the current situation and features of health informatics education in library and information science in America. It intends to explore the impact and value of accreditation on health informatics education in the field of library and information science.[Design/Methodology]The information was searched, collected, and organized on the official websites of the American Health Information Management Association(AHIMA), the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education(CAHIIM) and the Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management(CCHIIM). Combined with the status quo of health informatics education in the field of library and information science in the USA, the impact and value of the accreditation on health informatics education in library and information science was discussed.[Findings/Conclusion]Application of education accreditation and professional qualification certification of health informatics in America could help library and information science expand its research area. It will also help to obtain the industry recognition of health informatics. In addition, students who graduate from health informatics in the field of library and information science will be able to apply for professional qualification certification of health informatics. It will increase their employment opportunities and improve their competitive advantages.[Originality/Value]Research on the education accreditation of health informatics in America fill in the gaps of previous research. Understanding the standard of education accreditation and professional qualification certification of health informatics in America will help the community of library and information science recognize the significance and value of health informatics accreditation. It will also provide reference for the improvement and development of health informatics education in the field of library and information science.
