Integrative Development of the Discipline of Ancient Books Preservation and Conservation from the Perspective of New Liberal Arts: Disciplinary Category, Knowledge System and Curriculum Provision

Abstract: [Purpose/Significance] The sustainable development of the preservation and conservation of ancient books in China has put forward an urgent requirements for the cultivation of relevant talents. Under the context of vigorously promoting the construction of new liberal arts, it is imperative to build and develop the discipline of ancient books preservation and conservation from the perspective of multidisciplinary integration. [Design/Methodology] Through a comprehensive survey and analysis of discipline establishment and curriculum provision of 26 institutions currently offering majors(or research directions)in ancient books preservation and conservation,this paper gave a theoretical explanation of the disciplinary category from discipline connotation, disciplinary boundary and disciplinary construction, and constructed a disciplinary knowledge system and curriculum provision from the perspective of integrative development of new liberal arts. [Findings/Conclusion] The discipline of ancient books preservation and conservation is an applied discipline about how to protect the entity and content of ancient books, inherit the knowledge and woodblock printing techniques and other intangible cultural heritage of ancient books.Its knowledge system mainly consists of ancient books ontology, ancient books identification,ancient books cataloguing and classification,and the theories, methods and technologies of protecting ancient books.The discipline curriculum is set at three levels: original preservation, regenerative preservation and inheritance conservation, reflecting the integration of multi-disciplinary knowledge of philology, literature, printing science, binding science, materials science, biology, chemistry, museology and cultural relics and so on. [Originality/Value] The definition of discipline category and the construction of discipline knowledge system and discipline curriculum are of reference value to the multidisciplinary integration development of the discipline of ancient books preservation and conservation under the context of new liberal arts.
