Abstract: [Purpose/Significance]Reviewing and prospecting the discipline construction of publishing science is of great significance to promote its reform and innovation in the new era.[Design/Methodology]With literature review, this paper sorted out six major dimensions and elements closely related to publishing science, namely discipline and specialty development, personnel training, scientific research, team building, social service and international exchange.[Findings/Conclusion]The study found that Chinese and Western modern publishing science almost started simultaneously in the second half of the 20th century. By inputting and accumulating soft and hard resources such as scientific research, team building and discipline construction, a large number of publishing talents have been cultivated. Besides, both the cooperation among industries, universities, research institutes and the international exchanges between academia and industry have further enhanced the comprehensive strength of the discipline, thus promoting the development and maturation of publishing science.[Originality/Value]The study overviewed the past, the status and the future of publishing science domestically and abroad, which could help the decision-making for the inclusion of publishing science in the Directory of Degree Awarding and Personnel Training, and provide reference for the discipline construction of publishing science in the new era.
